Task: Argument Brainstorming
Prepare to debate 1 topic, considering both opposing positions on each issue.
For each position, prepare:
- Three convincing arguments to support the position.
- Specific examples and evidence to substantiate each argument (historical precedents, political developments, statistics, or real-world cases).
- Two counterarguments that the opposing side might raise.
- Possible rebuttals to challenge these counterarguments.
Debate Topics
Topic 1. An English Parliament
- Position A: England should have its own parliament.
- Position B: England does not need a separate legislative body.
Topic 2. Written Constitution
- Position A: The UK should adopt a codified constitution.
- Position B: The existing uncodified constitution is flexible and effective.
Topic 3. Scottish Independence
- Position A: Scotland would be better off as an independent country.
- Position B: Scotland should remain part of the UK.
Topic 4. The Future of the Commonwealth
- Position A: The Commonwealth can redefine its role and increase its international influence.
- Position B: The Commonwealth is a relic of the imperial past with limited prospects.
Language Challenge
Use appropriate debating and argumentation language to introduce claims, substantiate arguments, challenge opposing views, and formulate rebuttals.
Be prepared to defend either position, as roles will be assigned in class.
